AFL Tipping Preview 2016

August 16, 2016

Even contests to determine AFL tipping competition winners

The 2016 AFL season is drawing to a close. Whilst many of the AFL teams are playing for nothing at this time of year, the winners and place getters of many tipping contests will be decided over the next two weeks. Most AFL tipping competitions around the country wrap up at the end of the regular season, with the leading tipster at the end of Round 23 declared the winner. With just two rounds of home and away matches remaining, most tipping competitions will be decided by the selections in a few key games.

You might be trailing the leader of your tipping competition by a game or two, or perhaps you’re leading and are wondering when you can start cracking open the bubbly. We preview the games that will shape the final place getters in AFL tipping competitions throughout Australia.

The crunch games

West Coast vs Hawthorn

Bookmakers have this game as dead set even affair. The prices at the time of writing are $1.92 for both teams to win. It’s a crucial game for the Hawks. They need to win to retain top spot on the ladder and finish in the top two ladder positions to ensure a home qualifying final. Likewise, West Coast are now starting to put some good form together and need to win to leave their top four hopes alive. The odds suggest it’s a genuine flip-of-the-coin game. Selecting the winner here will be crucial for entrants in the top few positions in tipping competitions. You can read an in-depth preview of the game here.

Prediction: We’ll go with West Coast to beat the Hawks.

This game also represents a good opportunity to take advantage of Sportsbet’s cash back offer featured on our AFL promotions page. Combine this with CrownBet’s “lead in the second half” promotion and there’s a good chance the ebb and flow of the match will trigger a bonus bet from one of the providers.

Richmond vs St Kilda

Predicting how Richmond and St Kilda will play each week has been a nightmare for tipsters during season 2016. The form of both teams has fluctuated wildy. After recently bottoming out, Richmond is enjoying somewhat of a resurgence after a good win over Collingwood; last week they should have also put away the Cats. On the other hand, St Kilda were a mathematical finals chance before going down to the Swans last week. The Saints have been up for a while and that loss might have taken the edge off them. Again, local betting agencies see it as a very even game with the Tigers currently $1.96 and the Saints $1.87. The match is being played at the MCG which we think might be the deciding factor, we’ll go for the Tigers.

Round 23 – North Melbourne vs Greater Western Sydney

Looking ahead to Round 23, there are likely to be some 50 / 50 games. Depending on what happens with results in Round 22, the North Melbourne vs Greater Western Sydney game shapes as a very even contest. The Roos will be desperate for a win, and will be a good chance playing at Etihad Stadium, their home ground and favoured venue. GWS will be trying to win in order to earn a home final. This shapes as a genuine chance to claim a tip back on your rivals, as the game, and odds, likely to be very even.

Richmond vs St Kilda

Although the game will have no bearing on positions within the top eight, the Gold Coast vs Port Adelaide match could be season defining for many tipsters. Games at the end of the season where neither side has anything to gain are fraught with danger. Both Gold Coast and Port are evenly matched, especially up at Metricon Stadium where this one will be played. If you’re alive in the tipping contest when it comes to this one, good luck! If you’re one behind, select the winner here and you’re a great chance to finish in a tie for first.

So there you have it, there are four genuine chances to either claw back some tips or move clear of your AFL tipping rivals. There’s probably no need to go for the big upset just yet, play the 50 / 50 matches and hope the results go your way. If you’re out of contention for the overall prize, you can still claim the weekly prize from competitions like the official AFL tipping and Sportsbet’s Million dollar tipping contest.
