Roger Federer’s Wimbledon record
Over the course of the past 15 years, Roger Federer has made Wimbledon his own. His record there is unmatched, and will likely remain that way for a long time to come. He has now won 8 Wimbledon titles, the most recent of which he won in 2017. In 2018, Federer set out to win an unprecedented 9th crown, but was defeated in a 5-set thriller by South African, Kevin Anderson.
Federer’s win loss record at Wimbledon
Federer boasts an incredible 96-12 career win / loss record from his 20 appearances at SW19, a feat only matched by Rafael Nadal’s extraordinary record at the French Open. In achieving his eight Wimbledon title wins, Federer has also made three finals, one semi-final and four quarter-finals, giving him a record of 8-3 in finals, 11-1 in semis, and 12-4 in quarters.
Aside from an anomalous second round exit in 2013, Federer has made the final eight every single year since 2003, an extraordinary record; one he enhanced at the 2018 Championship.

Epic matches involving Roger Federer
Federer vs Sampras Wimbledon 2001
Federer won his first ever Wimbledon title in 2003, but his potential to dominate there became apparent a couple of years earlier when he met Sampras in the fourth round. Sampras, at that stage, was in the middle of a run of success at the event which may never be seen again, having won four titles in a row and seven of the past eight. When he faced a ponytailed, 19-year-old Federer in Round 4, he was widely expected to get the job done, despite Federer’s obvious talent.
- Wimbledon 4th Round 2001: Federer def Sampras 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5
What followed was a match for the ages, and one which would change the landscape of professional tennis. Federer’s 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 marathon victory was a changing of the guard. Sampras would never again win Wimbledon, and Federer would begin a run of success that would break many of Sampras' own records. The Swiss Maestro’s maiden Wimbledon title might not have come for another couple of years, but it was this match which laid the foundation for his success.
Nadal vs Federer Wimbledon 2008
Making Federer’s dominance at the event all the more impressive is the presence of numerous other generational talents who he has been forced to ward off over the years. One of these talents is, of course, Rafael Nadal, against whom he has had some of the most memorable matches of all time. One of these was in 2008, when Federer had won five consecutive titles, and a 22-year-old Nadal was all that stood in the way of a sixth.
- 2008 Wimbledon Final: Nadal def Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7
The champ went down early, losing each of the first two sets 4-6. Unwilling to concede his reign of dominance so easily to the young Spaniard, Federer fought back, winning the next two sets in thrilling tiebreakers. In a major upset though, Nadal ultimately proved too strong, winning the final set 9-7 and taking out a 4 hour, 48 minute classic to end Federer’s streak.
Federer vs Roddick Wimbledon 2009
It didn’t take long for Federer to bounce back, though it did take a second consecutive classic finals match. This time it was against Andy Roddick in 2009, and lasted over 5 hours. Federer eventually took out the match 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14, and in the process broke Sampras’ record for most Grand Slam titles.
- 2009 Wimbledon Final: Federer def Roddick 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14
Players to have beaten Federer at Wimbledon
Clearly, few have been able to conquer Federer at Wimbledon since his reign started 15 years ago. Only two players boast a winning record against Federer at Wimbledon since 2003. One is Novak Djokovic, who beat Federer in consecutive finals there in 2014 and 2015 to give himself an overall 2-1 record in the head-to-head battle. The other is little known Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, now ranked 109 in the world, who created headlines around the world, as bookmakers celebrated, when he beat Federer in four tight sets in Wimbledon’s second round back in 2013.

For a time, it seemed like 2012 would be Federer’s final Wimbledon success. He gradually slid down the rankings after that, and seemed unable to match it with the top tier of players any longer. Aged 35 though, he proved the doubters wrong last year in a season which saw him win both Wimbledon and the Australian Open. After again winning the Australian Open at the start of 2018, Federer seems fully capable of adding to his already record-breaking eighth Wimbledon Championship. Father Time is so far undefeated in world sports, but Federer is putting up a pretty good fight.
